The approach to art history is as varied as art itself. Here the BBC gives us a live action look at Monet as an old man in 1920, taking us back over his life and career, recalling his friendships with Renoir, Cezanne, Manet, Degas and Bazille. While we learn about their paintings, it is more about the artists themselves and how their lives intersected with Monet—it is, after all from his perspective. We know so much about the Impressionists, how they struggled to overcome widespread criticism, most enduring poverty and misfortune, being cast off by family, most only to reach fame and fortune long after their deaths—and yet this production allows us to see and feel the turmoil, the sadness, the anger and despite the derision of the art world and the public, the lifelong dedication to their art. I enjoyed this mini series immensely.
Does anyone not think of ballet when Degas is mentioned? More than half of his paintings, drawings and sculptures were of ballet dancers—not the beautiful and fairytale romantic notion we have but the reality of Parisian ballet dancers, young girls who worked hard in the studios, backstage where rich men had special privileges and the lives of these girls was often boring and brutal—evidenced by Degas’ sculpture of The Little Dancer. This film intersperses ballerinas today rehearsing in the 19th century Paris Opera with archival images and re-enactments of ballets from which Degas drew inspiration. Though it appears Degas swiftly dashed off his great works of art, he in fact would stage the poses in his studio and laboriously work and re-work his paintings, never really satisfied with the results. This is a fascinating combination of elements to reveal the man behind the easel.

First off, let me say, there aren’t any zombies in this book, whether that would attract or deter you. Jorie has come to save earth from monster-like aliens that turn people into mummies. Where do they attack first?
With last year marking the 30th anniversary of Harvey Milk’s death I wanted to see this documentary again. This is a wonderful documentary about Milk’s political career and events leading up to his death. Milk was a politician that built a community and it is sad to see someone like him struck down in his prime. This documentary won the 1984 academy award for best documentary.
It is a bit soul, a bit 80’s and a bit psychedelic all blended together. This album is really great and I enjoy listening to it over and over again.
I have listed Ladytron albums before, but not these two. 604 is their first album while Velocifero is their latest. You can compare how they have evolved from rough to smooth blending English and Bulgarian lyrics. 604 has some really great live tracks. My favorite song from Velocifero would be ‘versus’ that is part electronica and part folk.

It’s very rare that I find a book that keeps me intrigued enough that I feel a NEED to finish it in one seating. Graceling did just that. It’s filled with a bit of everything – fantasy, romance, action and mystery. The premise of the book is about Katsa, who has been graced with an extreme skill – that of killing. Like most gracelings, Katsa is exploited for her grace, and used as a tool for torture and death by her own uncle, King Randa. When a young prince comes to court with his own grace for combat, Katsa finds herself challenged in a way she has never been.
One of my favorite romantic comedy movies is French Kiss. This very odd combination of Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline works for me. The movie takes place in Paris as Kate (Meg Ryan) a recently dumped fiancée who is afraid of airplanes and flying, decides to fly to Paris to win back her fiancé from a Parisian goddess. It’s a mere stroke of bad luck that she meets Luc, a well-trained French crook, who decides to help her win back her true love. Of course, things turn out a bit different, but it’s the dialogue, the scenery, and the chemistry that make this a classic romantic comedy.

The latest album by Colombian singer, Juanes, has been by far the best album of his to date. It’s a mix of Spanish rock but you can definitely hear the influence of the Colombian cumbia throughout the album. The whole album is filled with uplifting music that inspires love, peace, and harmony with songs like Me Enamora, and Gotas de Agua Dulce.

This month my theme is "Picturebooks & Poultry".

Sometimes a simple picture book sooths the soul, as this one does with a short healing tale. It has a young hero who helps a bird with a broken wing mend, and gives hope for anyone to fly free again.
