The New Colony Six
Thursday, June 4
6:45 - 8:15 p.m.
Town Square
The New Colony Six

Delivering crowd-pleasing enthusiasm since November 1965, The New Colony Six is instrumental in creating the foundation of what rock is today. Chicago's own NC6 has long reigned as the undisputed leaders of the Windy City's Rock Revolution.

With the release of their first single, "I Confess", the Colony became the first Chicago-based group to successfully hit the national charts and open the door for others to follow. They achieved 14 Top Ten records between 1965 and 1972. Number 1 Hits, "I Will Always Think About You" (1968) and "Things I'd Like To Say" (1969) were Billboard "TOP 20 HITS," each selling in excess of one million copies. As a result, the Colony earned a staggering total of over 200 weeks on local and national charts.

The group enjoyed national television exposure on such programs as The Mike Douglas Show, Upbeat, Kiddie A Go Go and Lloyd Thaxton's Showcase '68 to mention a few. National tours saw the Colony share the stage with such acts as the Yardbirds, Association, Monkees and three U.S. tours with the Beach Boys.

In 2002, the Colony was honored when inducted into the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Immense fan loyalty resulted in the release of SIX compilation CDs of the New Colony Six's career - in Japan, England and the U.S.A.

Since their reunion concert in 1988 at Chicago's Park West, the Colony has continued to dazzle and delight fans of all ages with their performance. They are famous for ballads of love, sorrow and joy. All their hits and selected cover tunes will make up a truly memorable live performance and a fantastic musical experience for the audience.

Long time band mates, Ray Graffia (vocals) and Bruce Mattey (vocals and guitar) along with Rick Barr (drums), Gary Greenman (keyboards), Mark Eskin (guitar and vocals) and Bill Szostek (bass and vocals) have appeared continuously for major corporate events, festivals and concerts throughout the U.S.A.

The New Colony Six will welcome the fans after the show. This is a perfect opportunity to purchase their CDs and get them autographed. If you are interested in engaging The New Colony Six for one of your functions, please call Bruce Mattey at (847) 699-3355 or email him at bmattey@hotmail.com or go to the NC6 website: www.newcolonysix.com.

GETTING STARTED WITH TWITTER!

Are you new to Twitter? Twitter (www.twitter.com) is a fast-growing, free messaging service for people.

Twitter lets people send and receive short messages (called Tweets) via the web or via SMS using a mobile phone. Messages on Twitter are limited to a maximum of 140 characters, including spaces and they are generally public. Because each message is just a sentence or two, a carefully crafted post can convey a good deal of information without taking a lot of time to read or write. Twitter is a great place to find and connect with our patrons. Twitter (www.twitter.com/STDLAV) will be our primarily information tool to announce our Town Square Concert Series events and possible rain dates if our Monday events are cancelled due to inclement weather. It is so quick and much easier for the library to make a public annoucement when using Twitter. Please consider signing up today.

If you wish to create your account, start at Twitter - www.twitter.com - and click on Get Started - Join! This next screen leads you to Join the Conversation. Fill in the form and click Create My Account. After setting up the account, you are left with a blank screen, so you need to come up with something to write. You may want to try a Search for the Schaumburg Library to see what people are tweeting about. When searching various departments, go to www.twitter.com/STDLAV for the Schaumburg Audiovisual Department; www.twitter.com/stdlteen for the Schaumburg Teen Department; www.twitter.com/STDLReaders for the Readers Services Department.

Once you become familiar with the basics of Twitter, do some exploring on your own. Find your friends and make some new ones by using Twitter search, addressbook import, or URL look up; find people by name who currently use Twitter; find people using keywords, location, interests, and more; find people on other networks; familiarize yourself with the official Twitter text commands; and more.

Big Band Concert Series
(continued)

Special Consensus
Monday, June 8
645 - 8:15 p.m.
Town Square
Rain date: June 11

Special Consensus

The Special Consensus is a four person acoustic bluegrass band that began performing in the Midwest in the spring of 1975. The first band album was released in 1979 when the band began touring on a national basis.

In 1984, The Special Consensus initiated the Traditional American Music (TAM) Program in schools across the country and began appearing on cable television and National Public Radio shows. The band has since appeared on The Nashville Network's Fire On The Mountain show, toured for three seasons in the musical Cotton Patch Gospel (music and lyrics by Harry Chapin), and released 13 additional recordings. The band has performed at most traditional bluegrass festivals in the U.S.A. International tours have brought The Special Consensus to the United Kingdom, Canada, Europe, Ireland and South America.

The Special Consensus repertoire features original compositions by band members Greg Cahill (banjo, bariton and tenor vocals), Ashby Frank (mandolin, bariton and tenor vocals), David Thomas (bass, tenor and high baritone vocals) and Justin Carbone (guitar, bariton, bass and tenor vocals). Their repertoire also includes traditional bluegrass standards (songs by Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, Jim and Jesse McReynolds, etc.) and songs by artists from other musical genres (such as Blue Skies by Irving Berlin).

"Special Consensus is a superb bluegrass outfit in a classic vein but with more than enough modern sensibilities to attract every ear in this now pleasantly fractionating genre. The vocals are spotless, the playing as shiny as a newly minted penny, and music like this is the reason people come to love bluegrass. Special Consensus approaches this hallowed American musical form with boundless energy and an aesthetic reverence that tickles the ribs, tugs at the heart, and puts a restless two-step in boots and bare feet. You will find them bursting with high spirits and energy refusing to sit still with precision so tight you can set your watch by it...." A partial review written for the Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange by Mark S. Tucker

The Special Consensus will welcome the fans after the show. This is a perfect opportunity to purchase their CDs and get them autographed. If you are interested in engaging The Special Consensus for one of your functions, please contact the band. scgrass@aol.com or go to The Special Consensus website: www.specialc.com

The Chicago Outskirts
Vocalist: Carol Bennett
Monday, June 15
6:45 to 8:15 p.m.
Town Square
Rain date: June 18

Chicago Outskirts

The Chicago Outskirts is a 17-piece jazz ensemble comprised entirely of women from the Chicagoland area. The members come from as far west as Aurora and as far east as South Bend, IN. Most of the members play in other jazz groups in the area.

The idea for the band was born when two of the members met at FitzGerald's Night Club in Berwyn in March of 2003. Jenny Yuhasz, a drummer from South Bend, was there to see her brother, trumpeter Danny Barber, play with the Chicago Jazz Orchestra. Jenny sat in for a few numbers with the CJO. Linda Kottis, a tenor sax player from Naperville, was in the audience that night and began comparing notes with Jenny. They decided that an all-female big band would be a great idea. The next day, recruitment was underway. Fortunately, Linda and Jenny each had a separate network of female jazz musicians to call upon, and it was not long before the band was staffed. The band practices at the Oakview Community Center in Oak Lawn about twice a month.

The main purpose of forming the band was to give women jazz musicians in the area more opportunity to play big band jazz, both in rehearsal and in performance for public or private functions. A valuable side benefit provided by the group is encouragement to young women still in school who have a desire to pursue a vocation or even a serious hobby playing instrumental jazz.

The band had its first public appearance at an outdoor concert in Batavia in September, 2003 for the Batavia Railroad Depot Museum Sunday Concert Ser;ies. The Concert was featured on John Russell's show Midwest Ballroom on WDCB Public Radio. Since that time, the Band has performed at additional festivals in Oak Lawn, Batavia, Lombard, Cantigny, River Grove, the Rotary International Convention and many others.

Carol Bennett will appear as vocalist. She is a native of Chicago and is well known to the area having sung with numerous orchestras. Carol can also be heard on WDCB 90.9 FM radio. Having studied voice in high school, she has performed in many musicals including Carousel, My Fair Lady, South Pacific, Music Man, and Into the Woods. Carol appears with jazz combos and recently started singing with the big bands including Switch Time Jazz Orchestra and more recently joined the Chicago Outskirts. She is enjoying her participation in the all-girl big band.

If you are interested in engaging The Chicago Outskirts for one of your functions, please call Linda Kottis at (630) 369-4328 or e-mail her at chicagooutskirts@wideopenwest.com or go to the Chicago Outskirts website: www.chicagooutskirts.com.

The Limited Edition Big Band
Vocalist: Julie Ann Caselli
Monday, June 29
6:45 to 8:15 p.m.
Town Square
Rain date: July 2

Limited Edition Big Band

Under the direction of band leader Richard Gulbrandsen, the Limited Edition Big Band joins us with an extensive musical selection of big band, swing, jazz and dance arrangements.

These 17 musicians are a "cream of the crop" ensemble. Playing a variety of locations, including private parties, formal dinner dances, clubs, festivals and parades, the band has built up quite a following.

The ages of the musicians range from 25 to 85, thereby mixing experience with youthful exuberance. Several of the players have toured internationally with big stars. Dick Daugherty, who plays lead alto sax, at one time toured with Henry Mancini. Scott Fisher, trombonist, toured with the Ray Charles ensemble in Italy. There are many fine soloists with the band in all sections and they are frequently showcased. Limited Edition also lays claim to a featured trumpet player, Cary Davids, who moonlights as a nuclear physicist.

While the music of greats like Count Basie are popular with the band, classics by Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman also are well represented. Many tunes from the "good old days" have been brought into the present with new, modern arrangements.

Julie Caselli has been the vocalist with the Limited Edition Big Band for the last nine years. She started as a drummer and percussionist in 6th grade - skills she learned from her late brother, drummer/bandleader, Tony Caselli. Julie played all through high school in the jazz band led by Paul Tolosko. She gave up the drums to focus on singing at 19 and has been a vocalist ever since except for taking a hiatus to concentrate on motherhood. While Gloria Estefan was on Oprah promoting her tune Reach for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, Julie had the pleasure of being one of her backup singers for the show. Julie has enjoyed returning to her big band roots. She enjoys singing a variety of vocal arrangements by revisiting some of the beautiful timeless standards as well as more contemporary material.

If you are interested in engaging The Limited Edition Big Band for one of your functions, please contact Richard Gulbrandsen at (847) 697-8077 or by e-mail at rgulbrandsen@ameritech.net.
