Science Fiction October 2009
"Women who seek to be equal with men lack ambition."
~ Timothy Leary (1920-1996), American writer, psychologist, and futurist
Introduction
In this issue we discuss the Science Fiction/Horror Hybrid.  One on the first titles that came to my mind was the tv series Twilight Zone.  The library has many of these videos, radio dramas of the shows and has recently been getting episodes as graphic novel the latest being "The Midnight Sun".   The challenge for me is differentiating between horror and science fiction.  Is the Andromeda Strain" or many of Michael Crichtons works with their high tech labs and dangerous bacteria/virus science fiction or horror?  On this list "Infected"and "Parasite", play into this overlay.

For those of you fans of Honor Harrington we introduce you to two prolific authors in Elizabeth Moon and Eric Flint.

SF Short Stories. Adding to author Caitlín Kiernan's "reputation as the inheritor of Lovecraftian creepiness" (Library Journal), these eight tales of very strange futures explore the concept of alien-ness thoroughly and disquietingly. Ranging from the wastelands of Mars to the streets of a late 21st-Century Manhattan and from the moons of Europa and Saturn to an iceless Antarctica, Kiernan's settings are bleak, and her aliens include surgically metamorphosed humans, microscopic beings, and creatures that invade other worlds by possessing their inhabitants. Fans of horror, dark fantasy, and Gibson-esque cyberpunk will feel right at home.

Fans of Japanese horror novels like Suzuki Koji's The Ring will be drawn to this chilling tale that Fangoria magazine describes as a mix of Michael Crichton's work, Frankenstein, and the movie The Blob.
