La Casa de España en Houston Presents:
Crossing Boundaries, Forging Ties: Unity and Diversity in the Spanish-Speaking World
Cruzando Fronteras, Creando Lazos: Unidad y Diversidad en el Mundo Hispanoparlante
Monday, October 26 - Friday, November 13, 2009
Houston Public Library, La Casa de España en Houston, and the Consulate General of Spain present a photo exhibition on the unity and diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. This exhibition aims to show the unique mix of elements that both define and link the Hispanic world by comparing and contrasting its different ethnic groups, races, countries and traditions that form the unifying threads of what we call “hispanidad”.
The photographs were chosen from over 100 entries contributed by both professionals and amateurs of the Houston metropolitan area who wanted to share their encounters and experiences with the community. The pictures depict scenes from a wide range of situations where the old and the new converge; where the sacred and the mundane coexist; where Europeans, Native Americans and Africans share a holiday.
Tuesday, November 17, 2009 - Friday, January 8, 2010
Gain an insight into six centuries of scholarly work which shaped the modern world through this multimedia exhibit at HPL's Central Library. Leipzig has the second oldest German university (founded 1409), and is today one of the most important institutions of higher learning. The exhibit was exclusively designed for Houston and includes items from Leipzig University's library, which was founded in 1543.
- Browse images, timelines, high quality facsimiles, and video clips to get an idea of how scholars have worked toward modern science.
- See how students lived and struggled.
- Watch archivists and historians explain their work with manuscripts today.
Other treasures presented in this exhibit are two leaves from the oldest complete Bible manuscript in existence, the Codex Sinaiticus (ca. 350 AD), the Mongolian Koran (1306), a section of the Ebers Papyrus, the largest surviving medical manuscript from antiquity (1600 BCE), a description of the prefecture of Hangzhou in East China (1579), and an Italian landscape fantasy from the sketchbook of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1787.
